Gurston Down, 21st/22nd April.

Saturday 21st saw 12 entries in Sports Libre up to 2ltr class, with a very good mix of machinery.  The weather was extremely kind, with sunshine for the most part, and some light showers blowing through, and the breeze drying out the track very quickly.  For me, this weekend was very much a test session, so the runs were steady, and times improved through the day.  The new Simon McBeath rear wing, combined with the re-designed rear diffuser, made the rear of the car more stable.  My best time was 36.21secs, and 6th in class.

Sunday 22nd, was a more ominous day.  The weather forecast was for heavy showers about lunchtime, and for once they were right!  First practice was the only dry run, and a time of 35.94secs was a pleasant surprise as the run didn't feel fast.  In wet the, I finished on a 41.76secs, and 4th in class (out of 7 entries).

Wiscombe Park, 28/29th April.

With a new track surface laid over the winter, the first visit of 2012 to Wiscombe was going to be either very grippy, or very slippery.  It was the latter, not helped by the British weather!  On the Saturday 28th April, the day was dull and wet, and the track got more slippery as the day went on.  7 entries in the class, and times all very similar throughout the day, despite some of us on wets, and some on slicks.  My practice runs were done on wets, and I had no confidence in the car whatsoever, so for the timed runs I switched to slicks.  The result, 1.4secs quicker!  Finished the day with a 52.4secs, and 2nd in class.

The Sunday was a complete washout.  Very heavy rain, and high wind, had been going from about 2am.  An ominous absence of officials and competitors in the main paddock at 8am indicated the scale of the problem...tree branches had fallen across the track!  The days meeting was abandoned.  It was a very soggy journey home.

This weekend, 19/20th May, sees me return to Wiscombe, and fingers crossed for a dryer meeting.

Tue, 10 Apr 2012 10:09:39 -0700 Winter Happenings http://rupturedduck.posterous.com/winter-happenings http://rupturedduck.posterous.com/winter-happenings The winter rebuild is almost complete, and as you can see from the photo's, Chassis #9715 has had a change of colour too, with black & gold making a return to Ruptured Duck Motorsport.

After the "off" at Gurston Down in September 2011, the front bodywork was badly damaged, along with a front upright, an anti-roll bar drop-link, kinked front brake hose, and radiator damage.  The reason for the accident was down to a rear wheel coming off due to stripped threads on some of the wheel studs, a result of overtightening.  I'd like to think not by myself (but the previous owner perhaps?) as I use one of Aurok Ltd's torque wrench's, which are calibrated and certified.

So what's been done:-
New bodywork prepped, sprayed and fitted.  Many thanks to Chris Shepherd, at C&S Coachworks http://www.candscoachworks.co.uk/  , for doing the preparation and spraying.
New uprights, ARB drop-link, courtesy of Graham Hathaway Engineering.
Replaced the brake hoses, courtesy of Earls http://www.earls.co.uk/index.php .
Replacement wheel studs & wheel nuts(all 16).
OZ wheels replaced with Compomotive CXR's, lighter and don't require sleeved wheel nuts!!
New CF high-downforce rear wing, designed by Simon McBeath http://www.sm-designs.ndo.co.uk/wingshophome.html , and manufactured by DJ Racecarshttp://djracecars.com/  .
New rear diffuser and "double-decked" front dive-planes, again Simon gave some valuable advice on this.
New "barge-boards" in the rear of the front wheel arch's, to deflect the airflow out to the side of the car.
And lastly, the all important set-up by Aurok Limited http://www.aurok.com/index.html .  Thanks again Jules for all your support.
And before I forget, I must thank team mate Mark for "loaning" me one of his spare radiators, thank you team mate.

It's been a long winter, but it's been worth it.

Here's to 2012's season.

As I type this, in exactly 5 weeks I will have run the Silverstone Half Marathon and all of this training will have been worthwhile.

I've been lucky with regard to injuries, other than a week or two of very stiff calf muscles and the odd twinge, my 41 year old chassis has withstood being pounded round the lanes and hills of Somerset. Whilst I may not be the fastest, I can now get to 10 miles without any issues and feel surprisingly fresh at the end.

Work will be getting in the way somewhat over the next few weeks with considerable time spent away from home. Its just a good excuse to go running somewhere else!  I’ve enjoyed having running partners wherever possible. Thank you to Steve Savage who dragged me for 6.9km around Worcester in gale force winds and driving rain. Also thanks to Tony Hurcombe who gave me a nice running tour of his part of the ‘Nam (Cheltenham), I look forward to running Silverstone with you driver!

Fund raising has gone well, and I thank you all for putting up with my constant nagging, and most importantly thank you for any donations you’ve been able to make.  The target of £500 seems a long way off, but achievable. I’ll keep pounding out the miles if you keep chucking in the pounds sterling.

You can donate here:

or you can send a text to 70070 with any amount you like (£5 is just an example). You message should read:

Oh. My. God.  What have I done? Before I knew it I'd agreed to run the Silverstone Half Marathon for the Richard Burns Foundation. How did that happen? Simple. I was moved by a video, and how could any motorsport fan (or human) not be touched by this (caution, contains rallying) :

I've never run very far in my life, in fact, I'd never run at all until just over a year ago, so this seemed like a challenge worthy of 'maximum attack'.  My co-driver for the adidas Silverstone Half Marathon is Tony Hurcombe (fellow motorsport addict who races the 'mighty Fiat Bravo') and I'm determined we'll both make the finish.

http://www.sports-tracker.com/#/view_profile/RupturedDuck is where you can follow my training. If you fancy coming along for a run, running partners welcome to chat to or push me that bit faster or further.

Its time for another run in the beautiful Somerset countryside and time for you to donate here: www.justgiving.com/RupturedDuck

THANK YOU!!!

Sun, 01 Jan 2012 08:22:09 -0800 Wee Beastie 2011 Review http://rupturedduck.posterous.com/wee-beastie-2011-review http://rupturedduck.posterous.com/wee-beastie-2011-review Sadly team mates Mark & Linzi are having to take a break for 2012.  I wish them all the best, and I have my fingers crossed that I can persuade them to come "out to play" at some point.

My first season with the Global GT has been somewhat a baptism of fire, with mechanical 2 failures curtailing my season.  Firstly in May, at Wiscombe Park, a rear bearing failure put me out until August.  In September, the most dramatic failure.  Wheel stud threads stripping, and a wheel coming off at Gurston Down, resulting in me going into the undergrowth!  Damage sustained at Gurston Down has now been repaired.

On the positive side, the Global has shown great potential.  Handling is pin-sharp, with superb grip levels, and very quick acceleration.  If there is a down side, it's the weight.  Built as a circuit racer it's heavy at 395kgs (still has 380bhp/ton).  The OMS SC1 is lighter, as is the Force LM1.  Not much to strip out of the car to reduce weight, but I'm looking at it.
My first outing at April's Gurston Down test day showed me what the car is capable of.  By the end of the day I was posting times similar to my PB in the old Westfield (Wee Beastie 1).
Next up was a "fun day" at a drag event run at RAF Odiham, near to me.  Spent the time practising my starts, and getting more used to the gearbox.  1/4mile best was a 12.27sec, with an ET of 124mph.
Then the issue at Wiscombe surfaced, and I realised the bearing problem may have been slowing the car a bit.  During to bearing replacement, the gearing was also altered to give better acceleration.
First post repair event was Mamhead.  2 class wins, and set a new class record of 22sec.  Also a 1.88sec 64ft time was also recorded during the weekend!
Then the "off" at Gurston.  A real shame, as Mark & Linzi were there too, and it was our first head-to-head.  Times were very evenly matched.  I went off on my 1st timed run, and had already set a PB during the mornings practice.  Mark went even quicker in the timed runs, and I know I would have matched his times.

All crash repairs are now completed, and I am now working on developing the aerodynamics.  With help of Simon McBeath, a well renowned aerodynamics expert and regular contributor to Racecar Engineering magazine, one of his high-downforce rear wings (made by DJ Engineering) has been fitted, .  Further mods include ducting the radiator at the front, to aid the airflow and cooling.  Redesigned front dive-planes, to help balance up the extra rear downforce.  A new rear diffuser, which will be longer, deeper, and more steeply raked.  Some work on the front splitter to make it more efficient.  Lastly, a new shiny paint scheme!

My event plans for 2012 are looking very promising.  I have seen the proposed calenders for the championships that I normally compete in, and the dates fall into place very nicely.  I can do my usual events, but over fewer weekends (more double headers, and date matching between regional associations has helped).  As my budget is smaller this year, it all works out well, 13 events over 7 weekends (had I done my full 2011 season, it would have been 15 events over 10 weekends).

Once I have confirmed championship dates I will post up the events I plan to do.

Happy New Year

Ian (Wee Beastie II)

Sun, 01 Jan 2012 06:12:00 -0800 2012 Announcement. http://rupturedduck.posterous.com/2012-announcement http://rupturedduck.posterous.com/2012-announcement In 2011 after seeing Ian's (@globalbeastie) beautiful GHE Global GT1, we knew that getting our own GT1 was something that would change our relationship with speed events. We weren't wrong. After pedalling the Alfasud Ti and then the Pulsar 931 for over 5 seasons, we'd only managed a single 'pot' for a runner-up spot at BARC Gurston Down in 2010.

Our achievements in the first year of competition in the new car were; 4 class wins, 1 class record, The 'Pit Stop' (BARC SW) and the Carter Shaw (Brighton and Hove MC) trophies. A record we are very proud of and hoped to better in 2012.

Sadly we are taking a sabbatical this year and barring a surprise appearance, our Global GT1 will remain in the garage until at least next year. We have always been upfront about running on a limited budget, and this is the reason for our year off.

We wish all the best for Ian in 2012 and know he will spring a few shocks in his rapidly developing chassis and look forward to following his progress here at www.rupturedduck.co.uk and on the team's Twitter feed @RupDuk.

CONTAINS PICTURES OF BEASTIE NAKEDNESS!! http://rupturedduck.posterous.com/warning-contains-pictures-of-beastie-nakednes http://rupturedduck.posterous.com/warning-contains-pictures-of-beastie-nakednes It had to be only a matter of time, but finally Wee Beastie has got it's kit off!

All the old bodywork is now off the car, and the new bodywork is now being prepared for fitting.  Currently the central tub section is having the openings made for the roll-hoop, safety harness's and fire extinguisher.  Once they're done, the front and rear sections will be mated up for the panel catches to be lined up and fitted.  Once the overall fit is correct, then all sections will be removed and taken to be sprayed up.

It's all going to look very nice:-)

Tue, 27 Dec 2011 05:07:46 -0800 New rear wing http://rupturedduck.posterous.com/new-rear-wing http://rupturedduck.posterous.com/new-rear-wing Well, it's arrived.  A new rear wing for my Global (Ian's, chassis #9715).  Designed by Simon McBeath at The Wing Shop, http://www.sm-designs.ndo.co.uk/wingshophome.html , and fabricated by DJ Engineering http://djracecars.com/ , the wing/flap elements are carbonfibre and end plates are aluminium.  This new wing is the full width of the Global, and produces greater downforce, but with less drag, than the original wing.  Overall weight is about the same.

A re-designed rear diffuser is also being fabricated by me, and the front end aerodynamics will be tweaked to balance out the extra rear downforce.  This will be through extra dive-planes, and a duct running from the nose opening, around the radiator, then exiting in the upper bodywork, just before the cockpit.  The advice for this has again come from Simon McBeath.

A big thank you to both Simon and Mike at DJ Engineering for their help and advice.

Post "Gurston off" repairs are done, so now the development and upgrades can now commence.

Beastie out:-)

A new favourite picture of the season for Mark is getting waved off by the Mayor of Brighton (PICTURE - he will be buying a big copy of this) as he is about to take class victory at the Brighton Speed Trials (and equally as fast as the winner of the next class up), new personal bests at Gurston Down and Lynsey winning a nice big silver pot, we thought our season in Global #0230 had ended on a high.  2011 proving to be Lynsey and Marks most successful in over 6 years in the sport. The amazing little Global GT Light built by Graham Hathaway with the setup work and aero modifications by JDR Motorsport have made a very stable and quick little car.

Just as we were about to write our season summary, another event has rolled into our sights: Mutley Mayhem Sprint at Clay Pigeon on Sunday 2nd October.  So far this year, Lynsey and Mark are yet to have a completely dry event and Mark (Lynsey declined the chance to drive) has his fingers crossed that the promised Indian Summer that is appearing on forecasts, appears. Yes, in October.

The car has had a quick check over and is ready for action. Not even pressing this years brew of cider has stopped preparations.

Sat, 24 Sep 2011 00:44:40 -0700 Gurston Off http://rupturedduck.posterous.com/gurston-off http://rupturedduck.posterous.com/gurston-off Not the way for me to end the season in Wee Beastie (#9715), but s**t happens.  The damage is not as bad as the photograph's suggest, which when you consider I left the track at about 90mph, it's testament to the strength of the Global chassis.  Mr Hathaway builds a strong car!  The reason for the excursion would appear to be wheel stud threads stripping, on the near-side rear hub.  The wheel became loose, then came off!

Parts to be replaced/repaired are:-
Radiator
o/s/f lower wishbone
o/s/f track rod
o/s/f/ ARB droplink rosejoint
couple of panel fastnings
front splitter
front bodywork
floor panelling

The repair work is already starting, with more aluminium sheet ordered, a radiator from team mate Mark Alley (thank you, mate), and the rest will be sourced from Graham Hathaway.  I have a complete set of spare bodywork, which will replace the older bits, and some modifications/upgrades made to the aero parts...plus another surprise or two!  My lips are sealed;-)

See you on a hill in 2012, Beastie out!

An interesting sight in the paddock at Gurston Down on Sunday was a Dodge Viper towing a Honda F1 car.... Yes. Really.... It was almost as interesting as Linzi borrowing Morgan's scooter and zipping around the paddock :-)

Overnight rain and showers at the time of the final practice run meant that Linzi decided not to risk the car (or herself!) by taking to the hill. Mark decided that any opportunity in the car is worthwhile and took a steady (read 'slow') run up the hill with only 3 others from the Sports Libre upto 2000cc class.

As it turned out, that was the last we saw of any substantial rain for the day. With the Global behaving itself Linzi and Mark were both able to have trouble free timed runs.  Linzi posting a new personal best (beating her fastest in the Pulsar 931) and taking 6th in class. Mark blew the chance of a new best with a bogged start on his final run, but was massively quicker elsewhere, ending the event in 5th.

The top four places in the class were all held by massively more powerful (and expensive!) machinery, so best result possible was achieved.

Next outing is Frosts Brighton Speed Trials 10th September 2011 followed by the biggest event of the year for Ruptured Duck Motorsport, the showdown between all three drivers at Gurston Down on 11th September. One NOT to be missed!

It rained. Again. But at least not often or heavy enough to need changes to settings or the use of wets.  One dry event this year, just the one, PLEASE!! That said, when the sun came out it was a glorious day in Wiltshire.

The new floor worked exceptionally well with the Global very stable at high speeds and still just as drivable at a lower pace.  With practice being taken as just what it is, both drivers are confident for the two timed runs after one more practice first thing.

Follow the live timing at TSL by clicking HERE and we'll be tweeting updates when we can from the event to the @RupDuk account

Few changes to Global GT Light chassis #0230. Some revealed here, other bits when we've got pictures tomorrow. Not much gone to plan so far, but we've been to Gurston Down and signed on for the event, despite that the car isn't there yet!!!

We'll be all set in time for first practice at 08:30 tomorrow morning.  We're excited to feel what the difference will be in the car with a flat floor and a few aero mods thanks to the guys at JDR Motorsport. More will be done between Gurston and our outing at Brighton Speed Trials in two weeks time.

Bank holiday weekend looms and you have nothing to do? Why not pay a visit to Gurston Down in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside and watch one of the best speed hill-climb events in the UK and see Linzi & Mark Alley run the Global GT Light #0230 in Sports Libre (upto 2000cc).

In a very competitive class with some serious machinery, personal bests are targets for the couple as well as checking out the modifications that have been fitted to the diminutive Global.  Forecast is reasonable for both days, with Sunday looking the best of the two days for weather.

Car number 69 (769) is the one to cheer. Come and say hi to us in the paddock. Entry list is HERE. Oh, did I mention a Honda F1 car will be on display in the paddock?

Saturday was very wet in the morning, with torrential rain until lunchtime.  The timed runs saw the track drying, but under the trees it was still quite slippery.  Wee Beastie (chassis #9715) performed faultlessly, the new gearing paying dividends, with what is thought to be the fastest 64ft time seen at the venue. The days result, a class win and 6th overall.

Saturdays times:-

                                64ft                                                          Finish

Sunday cloudy to start with, but dry and by late morning the sun came out. Again Wee Beastie handled brilliantly, and just got quicker & quicker as my confidence in the car increased.  The last timed run saw me take a slightly different approach to the last sweeping corner, allowing me to carry more speed to the finish.  Again, a class win and set a new class record, and 5th overall.
